Hypoallergenic* Cat Breeds

Hypoallergenic cats are some of the most popular breeds available due to the fact that cat allergies affect millions of people, and nothing is worse than being unable to live with your favorite feline. While there's no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic cat breed, there are breeds that tend to cause less of an allergic reaction to those who are sensitive.

Most of us love cuddling with our furry companions, but some cats wreak havoc on sensitive peoples’ immune systems. Truly hypoallergenic cats are a bit of a unicorn; all cats produce allergenic proteins in their saliva, which is then transferred to their fur when they groom themselves. Cats with shorter hair tend to fall into this category, as they often shed less and have less surface area for their saliva to attach to. However, it should be noted that even among these breeds, individual cats vary greatly in terms of how hypoallergenic they really are. One cat of a certain breed may cause almost no reaction, while another may drive you crazy. Breeds in this category are included for different reasons. Some produce less of the allergen that those with cat allergies are sensitive to. Some have less fur, and some have none at all. Some require minimal grooming and leave less hair around your home.
